India Opt to Bowl First in T20I Series Opener Against New Zealand

India captain, Shreyas Iyer, has elected to bowl first in the initial T20I encounter against New Zealand in Christchurch. The Indian team arrived in New Zealand a mere two days ago, fresh from their series with the West Indies. Despite this quick turnaround, Iyer dismissed any concerns about jet lag or a lack of preparation, asserting, “No complaints, we’re a bunch of professionals.”

Adjustments have been made to India’s starting eleven following a washout in Bengaluru against the West Indies. Nitish Kumar Reddy steps in for seam-bowling all-rounder Shivam Dube, and Mayank Yadav replaces Prince Yadav in the pace line-up. These changes are likely due to expectations of a match featuring more seam than spin. Axar Patel and Naman Dhir round out India’s spin options.

New Zealand, facing selection dilemmas of their own, particularly in the absence of injured Rachin Ravindra, have confirmed Daryl Mitchell as the number three, pushing Bevon Jacobs into the middle order. This decision leaves Devon Conway and Josh Clarkson on the sidelines. Their seam attack comprises Nathan Smith, Matt Henry, Adam Milne, and Lockie Ferguson, leaving no place for Kyle Jamieson, Jacob Duffy, or Blair Tickner.

The complete teams are as follows:
New Zealand: 1. Finn Allen, 2. Tim Seifert (wk), 3. Daryl Mitchell, 4. Glenn Phillips, 5. Bevon Jacobs, 6. Michael Bracewell, 7. Mitchell Santner (capt), 8. Nathan Smith, 9. Matt Henry, 10. Adam Milne, 11. Lockie Ferguson.
India: 1. Sanju Samson (wk), 2. Abhishek Sharma, 3. Ishan Kishan, 4. Shreyas Iyer (capt), 5. Tilak Varma, 6. Naman Dhir, 7. Nitish Kumar Reddy, 8. Axar Patel, 9. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10. Arshdeep Singh, 11. Mayank Yadav.
