Bhuvneshwar Kumar Reflects on His Unexpected India Return

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who has returned to play for India at the age of 36 after a near four-year hiatus, has emphasised that he didn’t actively pursue his comeback. The seasoned fast bowler has picked up just one wicket across three outings in the current T20I series at an economy rate of 11.58. His opportunity to don the Indian jersey again stems largely from his impressive performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Reflecting on his journey back after India’s series victory in Wellington over New Zealand, which saw them clinch the series 3-0, Bhuvneshwar shared: “To be honest, I did not chase an India comeback. Of course, it is every player’s dream. I’m not saying I’m not thrilled—I am. Wearing the India cap is an honour.

“So, I am feeling very proud that I made a comeback. But the truth is that I did not chase it. For four years, whatever was coming in front of me – tournaments, challenges, whatever… About cricket, about fitness, whatever else. I kept doing [playing cricket]. I never thought that I would want to play cricket for [only an India] comeback.”

His stellar spells in the IPL over the past two seasons, yielding 17 and 28 wickets respectively, were pivotal for Royal Challengers Bengaluru securing back-to-back titles. These performances earned him a spot for the five-match T20I series in New Zealand. Earlier in the year, he was also a late addition to the squad against West Indies, stepping in for the injured Arshdeep Singh, although he didn’t get to bowl due to rain.

Despite the challenging conditions in New Zealand, Bhuvneshwar has been candid about his pride in representing his nation. He credits the IPL for keeping him in the competitive fold.

Bowling coach Morne Morkel, recognising the challenges Bhuvneshwar faces, remarked: “Look, I’ve got a lot of sympathy for his return. There is expectation after such a long break. He shone brightly in the IPL, but international cricket is a different challenge. He had limited time to train due to scheduling, making his task even tougher.”

As India looks forward to continuing their series in Auckland on October 30 and then concluding in Hamilton on November 1, Bhuvneshwar’s determination to perform at the highest level will be keenly watched by fans and experts alike.
