West Indies captain Shai Hope candidly addressed his team’s shortcomings following their defeat to India in the first T20 International of the five-match series. Highlighting a need to improve, Hope stated that the team must “do more rights than wrongs” to remain competitive against the world champions.
Reflecting on the recent match, Hope said, “When you come to India and are playing in their home conditions, you’ve got to play your best cricket. You know they’re a very tough team to beat, so you’ve got to make sure you have more rights than wrongs – something that we didn’t do well today.” India secured the match comfortably, winning by eight wickets with 32 balls to spare.
The West Indies were put into bat first by India’s Shreyas Iyer, who later made a century. Initially, the visitors were well-placed at 82 for 3 halfway through their innings with Hope on 41 and Sherfane Rutherford on 18. However, things took a turn, and by the 16th over, they slumped to 135 for 8. “When you don’t put a big score on the board when you’re batting first in Indian conditions, it’s always going to be tough,” Hope remarked, adding that the Indian spinners managed to extract more spin from the pitch, making it challenging for them when their turn came to bowl.
A critical point Hope touched upon was the misjudgement regarding Naman Dhir, predominantly known for his batting, yet he played a key role with the ball. “We tend to say ‘okay, maybe target this guy’, but still we’ve got to play the situation,” Hope explained, acknowledging that they underestimated him.
Despite the setbacks, Hope celebrated his own achievement, marking his first T20I fifty against India. “I probably opened the floodgates for him a bit,” Hope admitted, reflecting on his dismissal which spurred a collapse. He noted a need for strategic adjustments in handling the game situation better.
Among the highlights for West Indies was Rutherford’s 56 from 34 balls. Hope praised his performance, stating, “Rutherford has been playing really well in this format, he’s been playing some magnificent innings for us. It’s great to see him back in the runs.”
As the series unfolds, the West Indies will look to leverage their experiences from previous tours and the IPL, aiming for a stronger showing in the upcoming matches.
