Tim David’s Surprise Domestic Return Sparks ODI Ambitions

Australia’s T20 talent, Tim David, has been surprisingly selected to play for Tasmania in a one-day domestic clash against Victoria this Saturday. This move suggests David’s intent to vie for a spot in the 2027 ODI World Cup squad, says Tasmania’s coach, Jeff Vaughan.

David, now 30, hasn’t featured in a List A match since stepping in for Glenn Maxwell during the 2023 World Cup warm-up series in South Africa. His last List A game for Tasmania was in 2021, following an impressive stint with Surrey in the England One-Day Cup, where he hit two centuries and an unbeaten 52 in eight innings.

“Pretty exciting, isn’t it,” Vaughan remarked on Friday. “It’s been a conversation for a few years now, about when it might fit within his schedule and ours. Thankfully, the timing’s worked out for this game, and he loves representing Tasmania.”

David’s recall to domestic cricket is music to the ears of national selectors, who see him as a potential solution to Australia’s lack of firepower at the finish, a gap exposed in recent ODI series since Maxwell’s retirement. “He wants to make himself available for [the World Cup]. He wants to keep playing this format, learn it, excel in it, and make himself selectable by Australia,” Vaughan explained.

Despite his freelance franchise commitments keeping him from domestic appearances in Australia, the conversation about finding alignment for more games seems ongoing. Vaughan said: “Play tomorrow and hopefully the Brisbane game for us. We’ve also got a few games post the BBL on the cards.”

Tim David may take the field against Queensland on 16th November, provided he isn’t summoned for Australia’s ODI series against England, slotted for 13th, 15th, and 18th November. Should national duties call, David would be unavailable for Tasmania. The upcoming T20I series against England kicks off on 21st November.

Vaughan added, “We’ll likely bat him around six, injecting him late to maximise impact, akin to his T20 role. I don’t see much change in his approach; hopefully, he arrives at the crease around the 30-35 over mark to finish the innings.”

This comeback could well be more than a one-off, as both parties explore opportunities within mutual schedules, lightly aligning franchise and domestic pursuits. This strategy enables Tasmania to utilise his skills effectively while accommodating his international ambitions.
