South Africa’s cricket captain, Temba Bavuma, has commended his team for their tenacity and spirit following their resounding 176-run victory over Australia in the deciding third Test at Newlands. Bavuma called it the finest win of his career.
After beginning day four effectively at 40 for 4 in their second innings, South Africa seemed in dire straits. However, centuries from Ryan Rickelton and Wiaan Mulder rallied the team, setting a challenging target of 288 runs for Australia in the fourth innings.
Heading into the final day, the series was intensely balanced. Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada quickly disrupted Australia’s top order with the new ball, and offspinner Simon Harmer achieved career-best figures of 6 for 16 from 21.4 overs, leading to Australia’s downfall as they were all out for 111.
“There were honest conversations that we had yesterday,” Bavuma remarked during the post-match presentation. “I think a lot of them were about the character of the team and that coming out.” He went on to credit Rickelton and Mulder for setting a competitive platform and praised Rabada’s opening spell for setting the match tone.
South Africa’s series victory came after a heavy 214-run loss in the series opener in Durban. It was a rusty return to Test cricket, given the team had not played the format for nearly a year. Nevertheless, they found momentum, ultimately defeating Australia in what Bavuma described as a hard-fought series. “We at times found ourselves in awe of the Australians,” Bavuma admitted, adding that the trait of resilience is emblematic of South African cricket.
Following their World Test Championship victory over Australia at Lord’s last year, this series win further validates Bavuma’s leadership. The triumph also propelled South Africa past Australia to the top of the ICC Test rankings. Bavuma expressed pride in reclaiming the No.1 spot, saying, “That [No.1 ranking] is exceptional. It’s obviously been a part of our ambition as a team.”
Reflecting on the series, Bavuma commented, “Every time you get an opportunity to come up against Australia, you savour that. I don’t think I’ve been involved in a better series. So yeah, this is definitely there at No.1 [best Test win].”
Such achievements not only bolster South Africa’s current stature in international cricket but also build towards a legacy of excellence under Bavuma’s captaincy.
