Sikandar Raza Views Home World Cup as a “Blessing” Ahead of Retirement

Sikandar Raza, the seasoned Zimbabwean cricketer, sees the opportunity to participate in a home World Cup before retiring as a “blessing,” although he concedes that the home advantage in an ICC tournament might be minimal. As Zimbabwe prepares to host the 2027 ODI World Cup alongside South Africa and Namibia, Raza is reflecting on the significance of this event. Matches will be held in Harare, Bulawayo, and a new location in Victoria Falls.

“Every cricketer dreams of retiring after a World Cup,” remarked Raza, who celebrated his 40th birthday this year, during the launch of a mobile cricket game, “SIXR,” on Tuesday. He emphasised the personal significance of playing in a home World Cup towards the end of his career. Raza added, “The world truly needs to see what Africa has to offer—our beauty, vibrant crowds, and the overall vibe. Those who come to Zimbabwe for the World Cup will find it an unforgettable experience.”

As captain of Zimbabwe, Raza endorsed the World Cup format, which includes a progression from the first round to the Super Seven phase before the knockout stages. “I like the Super Seven idea. Teams that perform well deserve more games at the World Cup,” he noted. Zimbabwe’s commitment to securing additional fixtures outside their Future Tours Programme (FTP) has been crucial. “Our cricket board has done brilliantly to arrange extra matches, so we’re ready for anything,” he said.

The new Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium in Victoria Falls is set to host its first match with Zimbabwe facing India on 27th October. This venue promises to be a significant attraction for travelling fans, and Raza is hopeful of utilising any potential benefits. “We will try our best for some home advantage,” he admitted, while acknowledging the control ICC exerts over such events.

Looking ahead, Raza is optimistic about Zimbabwe’s potential involvement in an expanded 12-team World Test Championship (WTC). “If Zimbabwe is part of the WTC, our cricketing growth will surely improve,” he stated confidently. However, Raza is clear about his retirement plans, confirming he won’t return once he steps away from the sport. “I have come to peace with my life choices,” he affirmed.

Raza is among over 20 international cricket personalities associated with SIXR as brand ambassadors, a roster featuring the likes of KL Rahul, Chris Gayle, Shahid Afridi, and Eoin Morgan. This gaming app allows fans to engage with these cricket icons directly.

Through both triumphs and challenges, Sikandar Raza’s motivation remains steadfast, with notable enthusiasm for fostering the game’s growth in Zimbabwe and showcasing the nation’s splendour to the cricketing world.
