Shubman Gill, the captain of the Indian cricket team, suffered an elbow injury while practising in the nets, just two days before the first One Day International (ODI) against West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram. The incident occurred when a delivery from Mohammed Siraj unexpectedly rose and hit him on the right elbow. Gill was clearly in pain and swiftly exited the nets for medical attention, with Siraj and Virat Kohli, who was practising nearby, showing concern.
As he moved away from the nets, Gill was visibly discomforted, holding his elbow. The team’s medical staff wrapped his arm, and he spent the remainder of the session in recovery mode. Although he refrained from further batting, he appeared in better spirits later, sharing light-hearted moments with teammate Gurnoor Brar before leaving the field.
With just over a day until the match on Sunday, Gill is on a tight schedule to recover. Notably, his last series for India also saw him grappling with an injury when a ball struck his finger during practice in Sri Lanka. However, he recovered in time to participate fully in the two-Test series.
Before the unfortunate hit, Gill seemed to be in good form. He was among the early arrivals for training, joining Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ruturaj Gaikwad at the nets. Despite being challenged a few times by the lively bounce from Nitish Kumar Reddy, he confidently faced Gurnoor Brar with some impressive shots after a cautious start.
Injuries have plagued the Indian squad recently, prompting BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia to mention investigations into the causes. During the July tour of England for T20Is and ODIs, India struggled to present their best team due to various injuries affecting players like Reddy, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Harshit Rana, and Washington Sundar. Though Bumrah and Reddy have since recovered, Pandya and Rana are still unavailable.
Reflecting on the situation, Morkel shared, “Obviously, you want to have your strongest and, condition-wise, the best XI on the field. Sadly, it’s part of the game that the guys got injured at times when we didn’t ideally want them to fall injured. But luckily, we’ve got fantastic back-up in the wings and it’s a great opportunity for the guys to go and play a game for India, to make a name for themselves and to compete. But ideally, hopefully we can get all the injuries out of the way and later down the year we’ll be fine and we can take it on from there.”
