India opener Shafali Verma has been officially reprimanded and received a demerit point for a Level 1 ICC Code of Conduct infraction during the second T20 International against Zimbabwe. The incident unfolded in the 12th over, as Shafali, visibly frustrated after missing a catch at mid-off from Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano’s shot off Sree Charani, hurled the ball into the ground.
According to an ICC statement, Shafali breached Article 2.2, which addresses “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment, or fixtures and fittings during an International Match.” This marks Shafali’s first offence within a 24-month span. She admitted to the breach and accepted the proposed sanction from match referee GS Lakshmi, dismissing the need for a formal hearing.
Level 1 breaches typically result in a minimum of an official reprimand and can extend to a maximum penalty of 50% of a player’s match fee, alongside one or two demerit points.
India currently holds a 2-0 lead in the three-match series against Zimbabwe, with the final T20 set for Tuesday evening. Following this, three One Day Internationals are scheduled in Vadodara, starting from October 23rd.
This incident, while a rare blemish for Shafali, reminds players of the importance of maintaining composure. It’s expected that she’ll move past this as India seeks to solidify their dominance in the series.
