Rehan Ahmed heads to the Caribbean with the England Lions as they prepare to face West Indies A. This opportunity arises following his exclusion from Brendon McCullum’s senior squads for the tours of Pakistan and Australia. The Lions, under the guidance of their new head coach Jonathan Trott, will engage in a series of three T20 matches and five 50-over games in St Kitts and Nevis next month.
At 22, Rehan is eyeing redemption after a less-than-stellar performance in two ODIs against Sri Lanka last month. Despite having secured a new central contract, his omission from the main squads signals that the ECB sees this Lions assignment as crucial for his development. Trott expressed confidence that the Lions environment would help players like Ahmed push for national team selection. “I want to create a culture where England players will benefit from coming back and working in this environment to push for national team selection across formats,” Trott said. “I’ve spoken about how the Lions [programme] was important in my career.”
The Lions squad includes nine players who have recently committed to England contracts for 2026-2027. Among them, Dan Lawrence and Sam Cook are contracted for 50-over matches, with others like Mason Crane and James Coles on development contracts. England’s managing director, Rob Key, highlighted the significance of Lions tours, stating, “We think Lions cricket is massive,” especially as it allows players to participate in formats that are less frequently played.
Certain squad members, Coles, Jack, and Rew, will head to Australia for England’s T20I series after the third one-day game. Asa Tribe might miss the start of the T20s due to his commitment to Jersey’s Challenge League matches in Kenya, which are part of the 50-over World Cup qualification.
Thomas Rew leads the T20 side, following his success with England Under-19s earlier this year. James Rew and Ben Mayes are included in both squads, with Mayes having shown his skills at the World Cup. Adam Finch, earning his first Lions call-up, made an impression in the Blast series, while Matt Revis will miss out due to Achilles surgery.
This winter, the Lions also plan tours to South Africa and Sri Lanka, with longer format matches scheduled in South Africa. Chris Dehring, CWI chief executive, acknowledged the cancellation of the regional Super50 competition, emphasizing the value of the Lions tour for prospective ODI players as they vie for World Cup qualifier spots.
