Pollard Withdraws from Joburg Super Kings for SA20

Kieron Pollard, recently announced as the head coach for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the upcoming IPL 2027, has opted out of his contract with Joburg Super Kings (JSK) for the next SA20 tournament. Cricinfo has verified with JSK that Pollard has notified the team of his decision, providing them the opportunity to recruit a replacement from outside the auction pool.

Pollard’s new coaching role with MI poses a potential conflict of interest, as the same ownership has a stake in the SA20 team, MI Cape Town (MI CT). His withdrawal prevents a scenario where he would play against a fellow MI-side. Pollard’s history with MI CT includes appearances in the 2024 and 2025-26 SA20 seasons, where he featured in 12 matches, amassing 207 runs at an impressive strike rate of 171.07. Notably, MI CT did not bid for him in the latest auction.

Pollard’s ties with the MI franchise are extensive. He also coaches MI London in The Hundred and has played for MI New York in Major League Cricket from 2023 to 2026, and for MI Emirates in the ILT20 from 2023 to 2026. His connection to MI is perhaps one of the most varied in franchise cricket.

Despite recent events, Pollard remains active on the playing circuit, having represented Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League 2026. At 39, Pollard is on the verge of becoming the second cricketer, after Jos Buttler, to pass the 15,000-run mark in T20 cricket. JSK had secured Pollard for Rand 1.5 million (approximately US$90,272) at auction, highlighting the high regard in which he is held.

With the 2027 SA20 kick-off slated for January 17, Pollard will focus first on the IPL auction as MI’s head coach, signalling the next step in his multifaceted cricketing career.
