The Pakistan Champions have exited the World Championship of Legends (WCL) following the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) refusal to grant the necessary No-Objection Certificates (NOCs). Last year, the PCB openly criticised the tournament for “hypocrisy and bias” and cautioned against mixing politics with sport, instituting a comprehensive ban on Pakistani participation. The PCB has maintained this stance despite efforts by the WCL to negotiate the team’s involvement.
According to a statement given to Cricinfo, the Pakistan Champions expressed their regret over the situation: “Pakistan Champions regret to confirm that the team will not be able to participate in the ongoing World Championship of Legends (WCL), following the Pakistan Cricket Board’s decision to uphold its refusal to issue the required NOC.”
Kamil Khan, owner of the Pakistan Champions, had attempted to convince the PCB to alter its decision. In the end, Khan acknowledged the board’s authority and decision while expressing disappointment. He added, “We sincerely thank our players, supporters and fans for their patience, understanding and continued support.”
The tournament kicked off on the 3rd of October with a match between India and Australia, but Pakistan’s fixture against Bangladesh was delayed as organisers sought a resolution with the PCB. Although the WCL organisers were amenable to rescheduling Pakistan’s matches, the approaching fixture with Australia highlighted the impasse.
The Pakistan Champions squad, which included notable players such as Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Hafeez, Sarfraz Ahmed, and Wahab Riaz, was set to compete under Afridi’s leadership.
This friction traces back to India’s withdrawal from two encounters with Pakistan last year, one being a semi-final. While Pakistan advanced via a walkover, the PCB was particularly aggrieved when India received a point after pulling out from a group stage match against Pakistan. The PCB described it as “an unacceptable message to the international sporting community.”
Efforts to secure further comments from the PCB are ongoing, as Cricinfo continues its coverage of the development.
