South Africa were dealt a challenging hand as Anrich Nortje exited the field mid-over due to a suspected groin injury, during the fourth day of their second Test against Australia in Gqeberha.
This occurrence leaves South Africa potentially one fast bowler short for the rest of the match, as confirmed by Cricket South Africa. Nortje, who had bowled just three deliveries into his fourth over before sustaining the injury, will not return to the field for the remainder of Australia’s first innings.
In a pressurised showdown at Kingsmead, Nortje had managed an impressive feat by bowling 40 overs – his first significant contribution since returning to Test cricket after more than three years. While some queried if he could maintain his pace with little recovery time, his vigorous training sessions earlier in the week suggested he could.
During the early spell in Gqeberha, Nortje, alongside his fellow quicks, had applied considerable pressure on Australia’s batting line-up. His efforts were highlighted by dismissing Marnus Labuschagne, thanks to an exceptional catch by Simon Harmer at third slip, leaving the visitors at a precarious 45 for 4.
South Africa, having introduced an extra paceman in this match, opted for Kagiso Rabada instead of spinner Keshav Maharaj. With pace options like Marco Jansen, who claimed four wickets before lunch on the fourth day, and all-rounder Wiaan Mulder, South Africa appeared well-equipped. Harmer remains their primary spin option.
Should the bowlers dismiss Australia swiftly, South Africa might enforce the follow-on, as they push to level the series. Captain Temba Bavuma commented to Kayo Sports before the match that they were prepared for extensive time in the field. “We obviously like the option of the follow-on, but we’ll have to do well,” he remarked. “With the pitch yet to break up significantly, spin may not play much of a role, but there’ll be plenty available for our bowlers with the new ball and windy conditions.”
Nortje is one among several South African fast bowlers currently battling injuries; Kagiso Rabada missed the series opener with a hamstring issue, while Lungi Ngidi and others face similar ailments. South Africa’s squad includes Dane Paterson and Gerald Coetzee as backup pace options.
