Nahida Akter has been appointed as the new captain for the Bangladesh women’s T20I team, succeeding Nigar Sultana. The 25-year-old is set to lead the team with an initial one-year term, and her first major assignment will be at the ICC Women’s Emerging Nations Trophy 2026 next month.
A prominent left-arm spinner, Nahida is currently Bangladesh’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is, boasting 132 wickets at an average of 17.38, and her best figures read an impressive 5 for 8. In One Day Internationals (ODIs), she has claimed 81 wickets since her international debut in September 2015. Known for her skill with the new ball, Nahida’s standout T20I performance came against Pakistan in 2023, where she took a five-wicket haul. This was followed by her crucial three-wicket effort against the same opponents during Bangladesh’s triumphant T20 World Cup win earlier this year.
Nahida has also played a key role in Bangladesh’s recent ODI victories over teams like Pakistan, the West Indies, and South Africa. Reflecting on her new role, she said, “Leadership is a responsibility. I aim to build on the progress we’ve made and guide the team with the same passion and commitment I’ve always had on the field.”
Sultana, who led Bangladesh to 32 wins before her recent resignation, stepped down following the team’s struggles in the Asia Cup and Asian Games. Initially celebrated for her fresh perspective and media prowess, Sultana faced criticism during the last World Cup in India for her stern on-field comments, often caught by the stump mic. Despite a more subdued approach in later matches, the team’s form dipped under her leadership.
In support of Nahida, middle-order batter Sobhana Mostary has been appointed vice-captain. Mostary’s recent century against Australia in an ODI was a landmark achievement for Bangladesh, showcasing the potential depth and future promising performances from the squad.
The leadership change brings a fresh chapter in Bangladesh women’s cricket, with Nahida’s proven track record sparking optimism among supporters and players alike.
