Mumbai Indians have decided to part ways with Lasith Malinga, Paras Mhambrey, and Carl Hopkinson from their coaching team. This announcement was made on Thursday. Malinga and Mhambrey served as the bowling coaches, while Hopkinson took on the role of fielding coach. The franchise has yet to reveal who will replace them.
This forms part of a broader restructuring of the Mumbai Indians’ coaching staff that had already seen Kieron Pollard take over as head coach from Mahela Jayawardene earlier this month.
Malinga joined the MI coaching setup in 2023, ahead of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL). In contrast, Mhambrey and Hopkinson joined just before the 2025 season commenced. For Mhambrey, this was a return to familiar ground, having first been associated with MI between 2010 and 2017.
Acknowledging their contributions, the Mumbai Indians stated: “Mumbai Indians extend their heartfelt gratitude to Lasith, Paras, and Carl for their contributions to the team and the wider MI family. Their commitment, the relationships they have built, and the memories they have helped create will always be part of our journey.”
Historically, Mumbai Indians have been an incredibly successful franchise, boasting five IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. However, recent seasons have not been as fruitful, failing to reach the finals for six consecutive years and finishing ninth out of ten teams in the 2026 season.
As the team looks ahead, the IPL 2027 player auction is on December 16 in Goa, with teams needing to finalise which players to release and which to retain by November 15.
