Australia’s one-day international (ODI) series against Bangladesh might have to proceed without their captain, Sophie Molineux, who has sustained a hip injury. Cricket Australia is yet to make a final decision about her participation.
Molineux’s absence was noted in the Victoria squad for the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) opening round scheduled for tomorrow. The Australian team for the three ODIs, set to take place in Brisbane on 9th, 11th, and 14th October, will be announced on Wednesday. A spokesperson from Cricket Australia commented, “Sophie has an injury to her hip joint and her involvement in the upcoming series will continue to be assessed.”
Injury challenges aren’t new for Molineux. Earlier this year, a back issue delayed her stint as captain. Despite the setback, she toured the West Indies focusing solely on her batting before recovering well enough to contribute comprehensively at the T20 World Cup, successfully leading her team to victory.
Molineux recently shared with Cricinfo, “I suppose the injuries have taken up a large chunk of the last few years for me. But the lessons that you learn from going through it just makes me really grateful to be sitting here today with some pretty special memories under my belt.”
Australia’s schedule is demanding this October, featuring six matches, including three T20 matches against New Zealand after the series with Bangladesh. The New Zealand team will return in March for another set of three ODIs following the first-ever Champions Trophy in India.
Earlier this year, Tahlia McGrath and Ashleigh Gardner were named joint vice-captains. McGrath had led the team during the West Indies tour when Molineux was unable to play, although she didn’t make it into the playing eleven at the T20 World Cup. On the other hand, Gardner retained her vice-captaincy after a personal update that involved her relationship with Georgia Voll and the subsequent end of her marriage.
Gardner acknowledged the situation saying, “While my separation from my wife is a personal matter, I understand my current relationship status needed to be addressed by Cricket Australia given my position as vice-captain.” In an Instagram post, she expressed her gratitude for the board’s support and shared her commitment to her leadership role, aiming to provide robust support to her teammates this season.
This nuanced scenario underscores the complexities athletes face both on and off the field, with Molineux and her team navigating these challenges candidly.
