Former Australian batsman turned coach, Michael Hussey, has joined the national coaching staff in a consultancy role, focusing on major events such as the 2027 Ashes, the ODI World Cup, and the 2028 T20 World Cup.
Hussey’s transition into this role follows several short-term engagements with the Australian side, assisting primarily as a batting consultant ahead of the annual Perth Test. His previous commitments included commentary work and coaching roles with Indian Premier League’s Chennai Super Kings and the Hundred’s Welsh Fire, limiting his availability for broader duties.
Earlier this year, Hussey declined a coaching opportunity under New Zealand’s Stephen Fleming, now England’s Test coach, opting instead for this substantial position with Australia. Hussey’s new arrangement begins with the T20 series against England, moving into preparations for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand in Perth.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Hussey stated: “I am extremely excited about being a part of the team in a more formal and meaningful role in the coming years. This team has achieved so much in recent times, to which I hope I can add value to the coaching and playing groups ahead of what will be an exciting and challenging period.”
Australia’s head coach, Andrew McDonald, welcomed the inclusion of Hussey with open arms, saying: “Mike has been a highly valued part of our staff in the past and brings a considerable skill set which is complementary to the coaches and players. Not only is his expertise as a player and coach across multiple formats, competitions, countries invaluable, so are his qualities as a person.”
Hussey’s expertise is particularly sought after for upcoming T20 events, given his successful stint with England’s T20 World Cup-winning team in 2022 alongside Matthew Mott. For the forthcoming T20I series against England, assistant coach Andre Borovec will lead the team in McDonald’s absence, with Hussey joining as a consultancy partner.
Ben Oliver, Australia’s head of national teams, remarked on Hussey’s continued impact, stating: “With a heavy schedule of Test cricket over the coming 12 months, Mike will work closely with team management, coaches, and selectors to provide additional T20 support during this time. Mike has extensive T20 experience, and we look forward to the impact that he will have on the team as we prepare for the LA Olympics and T20 World Cup in 2028.”
Australia prepares for a busy cricketing schedule, with Hussey’s appointment seen as a strategic move to strengthen their coaching ranks during this pivotal period.
