Mumbai Indians (MI) are poised for significant changes in the upcoming IPL season. The team is nearing a deal to trade their captain, Hardik Pandya, to Punjab Kings (PBKS) in exchange for left-arm fast bowler Arshdeep Singh. This move will usher in a new leadership era for MI, commencing from IPL 2027.
Both franchises have confirmed their interest in the swap, which hinges upon obtaining written agreements from the players, expected within the next day or so. Thereafter, the teams will finalise the negotiation before official ratification by the IPL.
Hardik Pandya’s desire to depart MI surfaced after several discussions following MI’s underwhelming ninth-place finish in IPL 2026. Although MI explored options with nearly all teams except Royal Challengers Bangalore, they appear to have settled on a trade with PBKS.
MI’s need for a reliable fast bowler alongside Jasprit Bumrah became evident as Trent Boult’s effectiveness declined last season. Acquired in 2025 for INR 12.5 crore, Boult’s lacklustre performance saw him play merely five games. Arshdeep, who recently excelled at Wankhede Stadium, will bolster the bowling line-up and complement Bumrah effectively.
For Arshdeep Singh, this transition marks his first move away from PBKS since his 2019 debut. During his time with PBKS, Arshdeep captured 111 wickets across 96 matches at an economy of 9.18, joining MI with high expectations. PBKS, however, still retain promising Indian seamers Yash Thakur and Vijaykumar Vyshak.
Hardik previously transitioned from Gujarat Titans to MI in 2024, marking a significant trade where he was expected to be the team’s long-term captain following Rohit Sharma’s illustrious tenure. Despite the promise, Hardik struggled to deliver consistent results; under his leadership, MI had a patchy record, including a wooden spoon finish in 2024 and an inconsistent 2026.
His captaincy win-loss ratio at MI was notably lower compared to his previous stint at Gujarat Titans. At MI, he managed 15 wins and 24 losses, contrasting sharply with his successful spell at Gujarat Titans, where he won 22 out of 31 matches.
Amidst this change in captaincy, MI has rejuvenated its coaching team with Kieron Pollard stepping in as head coach, alongside new additions such as Robin Uthappa (batting coach), Mitchell McClenaghan (bowling coach), and T Dilip (fielding coach).
These changes signify a fresh chapter for MI, striving to recapture their previous glory in the IPL.
