Markram Expected to Play in Gqeberha Test Despite Missing Training

Aiden Markram, recognised as South Africa’s standout batsman during the first Test in Durban against Australia, didn’t accompany the team to Gqeberha for their next match. He was absent from the training sessions at St George’s Park. However, the team expects him to join on Saturday and feature in the upcoming second Test match.

Markram, returning from a brief personal leave, is slated to return to the city by Friday night. He is anticipated to attend an optional practice session on Saturday and is likely to secure his spot in the starting eleven for Sunday’s Test.

In Markram’s absence, South Africa’s practice line-up included David Bedingham, Simon Harmer—covering for Markram at second slip—Wiaan Mulder, and Marco Jansen. Ryan Rickelton, stepping in as wicketkeeper, conducted his drills donning a floppy hat while Kyle Verreynne supported by providing throwdowns.

Rickelton focused intently on wicketkeeping drills and then shifted to an extended batting session. Matthew Breetzke and Marques Ackerman, who will replace Rickelton moving further down the order and the dropped Tristan Stubbs, faced up against the formidable bowling of Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Mulder, and Jansen, which shapes up as South Africa’s primary bowling squad.

It seems South Africa might opt for just one spinner, and Harmer’s slip position doesn’t necessarily indicate preference over Keshav Maharaj. They have a third spinning option in Senuran Muthusamy.

South African fans eagerly await updates on Markram, particularly following his shoulder treatment in the opening Test. It was explained as mere tightness and addressed on the field. His early return from The Hundred and missing the first ODI were also due to personal reasons. Indications suggest Markram will be fully fit and available for this Test, and, barring any complications, for matches thereafter.
