In the twilight of a remarkable 20-year career, 37-year-old Virat Kohli is embracing a fresh challenge: “unlocking a new version” of himself in One Day Internationals (ODIs). The Indian cricketer recently sailed past a significant landmark, scoring his 15,000th ODI run whilst claiming his 55th century against the West Indies.
Reflecting on his journey and recent form, Kohli told the host broadcaster, “I got a challenge at this stage of my career to kind of up the ante and, you know, play a gear to higher end… which will eventually help, you know, anything that you play for, be it playing for India or in the IPL.” His unbeaten 139 off 88 balls in Thiruvananthapuram, an inning highlighted by 9 sixes and 10 fours, underscored his intent.
Despite this achievement, Kohli insists milestones aren’t his focus. “It’s just understanding the situation… Achievements come along. Obviously, I feel very grateful and very blessed,” he remarked. Kohli’s evolution has transformed his ODI approach, which traditionally balanced risk with sustained innings. This year, however, he’s third in 2026’s highest scorers, with only three among the top 50 surpassing his strike rate of 116.74.
Emphasising his positive intent, Kohli stated, “I promised myself I’m going to play positively because I can… without, you know, playing reckless shots.” The synergy between physical fitness and mental clarity plays a crucial role in his strategy. Kohli said, “I think to follow a free mind, you need a fit body… I stay physically fit and then I’m able to visualise the game.”
Kohli also reflects on motivation and appreciation for his cricketing journey, noting, “It can be very easy to forget where you came from… I enjoy each and every minute that I’m out there playing for India because I understand that, as I said, you know, it could have been a possibility that I wouldn’t be standing here.”
With steadfast dedication and gratitude, Kohli continues to pursue cricketing excellence, aspiring to not only elevate his performance but also, as he eloquently puts it, “put a smile on my face and hopefully make other people smile too.”
