After a commendable 25 years at Hampshire, Jimmy Adams has opted for a fresh challenge, joining Tasmania’s coaching staff in Australia. Known for his contributions on and off the field, Adams spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League (BBL) before deciding to relocate Down Under with his family.
At 46, Adams’s career at Hampshire is filled with notable achievements. He was the club captain from 2012 to 2015 and transitioned into coaching post-retirement in 2018. Initially a second-team coach, he became Hampshire’s batting coach and stepped in as the head coach for the Metro Bank One-Day Cup in 2025, where Hampshire reached the finals. Despite their success in limited overs, Hampshire faced setbacks this year, finishing as T20 Blast finalists but suffering relegation from County Championship Division One. Under Adams’s guidance, the young batters had difficulty advancing, with only Jake Lehmann, Nick Gubbins, and Ben Brown managing over 500 runs in the Championship season.
While Cricket Tasmania has yet to outline Adams’s exact duties, Hampshire acknowledged his departure last Friday. Reflecting on his tenure, Adams expressed gratitude, stating, “I’ve been lucky enough to fulfil a dream, and I’ll be following Hampshire for the rest of my life. It’s been a tough decision to leave, but I think the timing’s right, and it gives me a chance to test myself elsewhere.”
Giles White, Hampshire’s director of cricket, remarked, “We’re sad to see Jimmy Adams leave but delighted for him and the Adams family as they embark on an exciting new opportunity in Australia with Tasmania. A fantastic player, captain and coach for the club over 25 years, Jimmy has embodied our values throughout his time here.”
The shift isn’t unique to Adams, as county-level coaching sees more changes. Jim Troughton has departed from Surrey to return to Warwickshire, with Grant Flower expected to join Surrey from Sussex soon.
Adams’s influence and dedication leave a lasting legacy at Hampshire, and his new role in Tasmania is eagerly anticipated by those who have seen his impact over the years.
