Yashasvi Jaiswal, a talent recognised on the cricket field with 83 IPL matches for Rajasthan Royals and a secure place in India’s Test team, is still seeking his spot in the national white-ball line-up. With established names like Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill opening the innings and Virat Kohli at number three, Jaiswal finds himself waiting in the wings for his chance.
Before India’s ODI series against West Indies, Jaiswal appeared in fine form during practice, yet he’s expected to sit out the first match, as batting coach Sitanshu Kotak confirmed Gill’s fitness post an elbow injury. Despite Jaiswal’s excellent performance in his six ODIs, accumulating 285 runs at an average of 71.25 with two centuries, competition remains fierce within the squad.
“We see much competition and players performing,” Kotak remarked. “Jaiswal is among the best, and whenever he gets a chance, he performs. But, as is true with having three skilled wicketkeepers, only one will feature on the team.” Kotak emphasised the importance of perseverance and assured that Jaiswal’s development is closely monitored.
Jaiswal’s ODI debut in March, nearly two years after his Test debut, saw him excel, particularly with an unbeaten 110 against Afghanistan. Yet, he wasn’t selected for the subsequent England tour. The balancing act between nurturing new talent and securing wins is delicate. Kotak explained, “It’s the leadership’s role to offer opportunities while ensuring results.”
In parallel, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja’s return to ODI cricket has caught attention. Absent from the format since January, Jadeja is poised as a key figure for the forthcoming World Cup, according to Kotak. “Jadeja is obviously in the mix and essential to India’s squad,” Kotak confirmed, citing Jadeja’s exceptional fielding and experience.
With the 2027 ODI World Cup on the horizon, each series marks strategic preparation. Against a skilled West Indies team, currently ranked 10th, India focuses on exploiting their strengths, anticipating nearly 31 ODIs before the tournament begins. Kotak noted, “Each game is crucial to build towards the World Cup, regardless of the opposition.”
Attention is particularly on adapting to varied conditions, with Kotak discussing strategies for different pitches, such as those anticipated in South Africa. As India embarks on upcoming series against teams including New Zealand, careful planning and execution are seen as pivotal. Kotak concluded, “Every series is valuable in prepping for any challenge worldwide.”
