The Indian Premier League (IPL) has announced that the auction for its 2027 season is set for 16th December in Goa. This mini-auction coincides with the second One Day International (ODI) match between India and Sri Lanka taking place in Bengaluru on the same day.
Teams have been informed that the deadline for player retention is 15th November. Following this, the IPL will provide each franchise with a pool of registered players for selection before finalising the list and auction order in the week leading up to the event.
There have been only two trades this year since the 2026 season wrapped up, adhering to IPL’s trade regulations. The transfer window, which opens a month after the season concludes, stays active until a week before the auction and resumes up to a month before the new season begins. In a notable trade, Rishabh Pant was swapped by Lucknow Super Giants to Delhi Capitals in exchange for Kuldeep Yadav in June. More recently, Delhi Capitals traded T Natarajan to Sunrisers Hyderabad for Zeeshan Ansari, who is yet to be capped.
The starting dates for the 2027 season are still pending a final decision. Initially, a window from 14th March to 30th May was outlined for the 2024-2026 seasons. However, after a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) meeting in September, board secretary Devajit Saikia hinted the tournament might commence towards the end of March.
This will be the final mini-auction under the current cycle, with a mega auction planned ahead of the 2028 season. This significant auction will also mark the beginning of the next media rights cycle. Back in 2022, IPL made headlines by joining the ranks of elite global sporting events as its media rights were sold for a staggering INR 48,390.5 crore (approximately US$6.2 billion).
