India’s Spirited Win Despite Early Wobbles

In an unexpected twist during the first T20I in Raipur, India Women faced a challenging start against Zimbabwe, finding themselves at 19 for 4. This scenario was imagined after holding Zimbabwe to 114, thanks to Nyasha Gwanzura’s impressive bowling which saw her take three wickets in quick succession. Despite these early setbacks, India emerged victorious, led by a crucial 82-run partnership between Deepti Sharma and debutant Niki Prasad.

Deepti, exhibiting her experience, scored 49 off 37 deliveries, while Prasad impressed with an unbeaten 39 from 35 balls. Reflecting on Prasad’s contribution, Deepti commented, “Niki played really well. Honestly, it didn’t seem at all like she was making her debut. It felt like she had played quite a few matches in the past, for the country.” Deepti highlighted the remarkable poise demonstrated by Prasad, as well as the significance of their partnership, which pulled the team out of a precarious position.

The Indian team’s dressing room maintained a sense of calm despite the early wickets, as Deepti recounted, “To tell you the truth, the two of us were there, and there was Richa as well, batting behind us. It didn’t feel like [a situation where] anything could happen. We took a bit of a pause at that moment, and thought about what to do next.” She expressed belief in the value of such difficult situations in fostering resilience both individually and for the team.

India’s initial setbacks were primarily due to mistimed attacking shots, a strategy Deepti Sharma supports. Commenting on the aggressive play, she stated, “Of course we want to play an aggressive brand of cricket, and that was in our mind.” She acknowledged that sometimes things might not go to plan but emphasised the importance of learning from each game: “There is no god who gives you exactly what you want. But we always learn from our innings and our matches.”

Though she narrowly missed a half-century, top-edging a sweep when victory was near, Deepti admitted her disappointment at not finishing the match, “At that moment I felt bad for not finishing the match… I’m sure I won’t repeat it.” Her reflection demonstrates the team’s commitment to continuous improvement.

India’s ability to bounce back from a shaky start marks a promising beginning to the Zimbabwe tour, showcasing the team’s depth and resilience.
