Gambhir Calls for Fairer Wicket Conditions After India’s Record Chase

In the wake of India’s extraordinary chase of 406 against the West Indies in the second ODI in Guwahati, head coach Gautam Gambhir has voiced concerns over the fairness of the playing conditions. Gambhir insists on a need for a fair contest between bat and ball, criticising the pitch for greatly favouring batsmen, which overshadows the bowlers’ efforts.

Speaking to Star Sports post-match, Gambhir stated, “Look, if I have to be absolutely honest, I feel I think there has to be a bit of more contest between bat and ball… this is not cricket, this is only batting.” He empathised with young bowlers who face the tough task of bowling on pitches that see scores soaring past 400, highlighting how such conditions undermine their performances and development.

Gambhir elaborated on his coaching philosophy, emphasising the importance of assessing bowlers on execution rather than mere figures. “The first thing is that you need some sympathy and a bit of margin for the bowlers,” he noted. Recognising the limited options bowlers have with modern power-hitting, and two new balls, he mentioned that judgements should focus on their ability to execute plans despite challenging circumstances.

Auqib Nabi, who debuted in the match, was brought into the discussion, with Gambhir suggesting that developing bowlers requires patience and support. As Gambhir pointed out, “somewhere you need to give them a bit of support and keep a bit of an extra cushion or extra options for them.” He lamented the lack of opportunity for bowlers to shine, hinting at the broader implications this has for team strategy ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The head coach underlined the urgency of preparing the squad, noting that the time available may be deceptive. “You said that there is one year, but in that one year, three months will go into the IPL…” he clarified. With less than 20 ODIs before the World Cup, each game becomes crucial for testing and refining India’s roster. He stressed the significance of facing real pressure, saying, “World Cup is all about pressure… the more we expose them at such times, the better it is for Indian cricket.”

In conclusion, Gambhir’s remarks urge a reassessment of pitch conditions in ODIs and depict a strategic approach towards crafting a World Cup-ready team. His comments resonate with the need for balance in cricket, where both bowlers and batsmen can contribute meaningfully to the game’s outcome.
