Danni Wyatt-Hodge’s Release Explained by Overseas Strategy and National Duties

Gujarat Giants (GG) have been strategic in their player releases ahead of the WPL 2027 auction, parting with just four players. Among them is the notable departure of England opener Danni Wyatt-Hodge. This decision was attributed to a blend of GG’s overseas player strategy and a potential scheduling conflict with England’s international commitments, as explained by head coach Michael Klinger.

Wyatt-Hodge, who made history earlier this year as the first woman to score over 300 runs at a T20 World Cup, only managed a single appearance in the WPL 2026. Her unfortunate illness during the tournament opened the door for Georgia Wareham, whose impressive all-round performances secured her spot in the team. “Last season, the overseas lineup just didn’t accommodate her,” Klinger stated during a media interaction. “She was in great form initially, but illness set her back, and Wareham’s return changed our strategy.”

The WPL 2027 is slated for January 14 to February 7, while England’s FTP (Future Tours Programme) indicates a Sri Lanka tour around the same time. Moreover, the ICC has shifted the women’s Champions Trophy to February, potentially creating a conflict. According to Klinger, Wyatt-Hodge expressed a desire to play leading into the Champions Trophy. “She wanted match practice ahead of the tournament, making the release a logical step for all involved,” he explained.

Klinger also discussed GG’s decision to retain Yastika Bhatia despite her absence last year due to knee surgery. “Having seen her performances with Mumbai Indians, it was an easy decision,” he commented. Yastika has shown potential with recent contributions for India A and in the CPL, indicating her positive form.

Attention was also given to Bharti Fulmali, whose domestic and WPL success hasn’t fully translated to the international stage. Fulmali’s national stats contrast sharply with her GG performances, but Klinger’s trust remains firm. “Bharti’s style is dynamic; she thrives in the role we’ve crafted for her,” he praised. “She looks content and purposeful in our setup.”

Lastly, updates on Kashvee Gautam’s knee recovery were encouraging. With a focus on being ready for India’s home series against England A at the end of November, Kashvee’s progress is promising. “Her sessions at the BCCI Centre are going well, and she’s expected to be in top form for the upcoming matches,” observed Klinger.

As GG look ahead to the WPL 2027 auction, the calculated player shifts reflect their broader strategy balancing international commitments and team composition.
