Bangladesh Decide to Bat First, Select Nayeem Hasan for Test Against Afghanistan

In a strategic decision, Bangladesh’s captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has elected to bat first in their sole Test against Afghanistan, being held in Abu Dhabi. This choice follows a trend at this venue, where captains in the last ten Tests have opted to bat initially, with only one resulting in a loss.

Bangladesh have made notable changes, bringing in Ebadot Hossain to replace Shoriful Islam, who had achieved career-best bowling figures of 7 for 49 in a recent Test against Australia in Mackay. Nayeem Hasan, despite not being in the original squad, has been selected after travelling with the team and participating in a practice match against the UAE. Hasan Mahmud keeps his place in the side, with Taskin Ahmed rested for this match.

Afghanistan, on the other hand, has embraced a batting-centric strategy. Shahidullah, who is in fine form, will be playing at No. 7, supported by the all-round capabilities of Ismat Alam and Yamin Ahmadzai. They continue with the opening pair of Sediqullah Atal and Abdul Malik, and rely on the experience of new captain Rahmat Shah and his predecessor, Hashmatullah Shahidi, to stabilise the middle order. For the bowling attack, they are banking on left-arm spinner Ziaur Rahman Akbar, Qais Ahmed’s wrist spin, along with the pace duo of Ismat Alam and Yamin Ahmadzai.

Afghanistan’s lineup is Sediqullah Atal, Abdul Malik, Rahmat Shah (captain), Hashmatullah Shahidi, Ikram Alikhil, Zia Akbar, Shahidullah, Yamin Ahmadzai, Ismat Alam, Qais Ahmed, and Mohammad Saleem. The Bangladesh team consists of Tanzid Hasan, Shadman Islam, Mominul Haque, Najmul Hossain Shanto (captain), Mushfiqur Rahim, Litton Das (wicketkeeper), Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nayeem Hasan, Taijul Islam, Hasan Mahmud, and Ebadot Hossain.

This Test promises to be an intriguing contest, with both teams lined up strategically to play to their strengths.
