Jonny Bairstow, the celebrated England wicketkeeper-batsman, is set to take his first steps into the Big Bash League (BBL) later this year, having signed with the Melbourne Renegades. This move marks Bairstow’s inaugural stint in the BBL, despite his extensive history with Australian cricket through three Ashes series down under.
At 37, Bairstow remains a familiar face for Australian cricket enthusiasts, largely due to his prominent role in numerous Ashes encounters over the last 15 years. His previous arrangement with the Melbourne Stars in 2020 fell through; however, his recent connection with Clint McKay, the Renegades’ high-performance manager, made this collaboration possible. The two share a history from McKay’s time at Yorkshire in 2010.
With the departure of Tim Seifert to the Sydney Sixers, the Renegades sought an adept top-order wicketkeeper-batsman, and Bairstow’s varied exploits quickly put him on their radar.
“I’ve always loved playing in Australia. The crowds are passionate, and I’ve always enjoyed that side of the contest,” Bairstow shared, reflecting on his upcoming venture. “I’m really excited about joining the Renegades. Having the MCG as our home ground is pretty special and I’m looking forward to getting out there, playing the way I play and hopefully entertaining the fans.”
Bairstow’s rapport with Australian crowds is well-curated, with two Test centuries in Perth and Sydney as notable achievements. However, many Australians remember him for events like the 2023 Alex Carey stumping at Lord’s and a peculiar “headbutt” incident involving Cameron Bancroft in 2017.
“I know there’s been a bit of history over the years and I’m sure I’ll hear plenty about it when I get over there,” Bairstow remarked. “That’s part of the fun of it.”
Luke Ronchi, the Renegades coach, expressed his excitement about Bairstow’s addition: “Jonny has been one of the most damaging white-ball batters in world cricket for a long time and we’re delighted to have him joining us,” Ronchi said. “He’s played 100 Test matches, won World Cups, and performed in some of the biggest games and competitions around the world. That experience is incredibly valuable to our group.”
Ronchi added, “He’s aggressive, he puts pressure back on the opposition, and he’s capable of changing a game very quickly. We’re building a squad that we believe can play an exciting and aggressive brand of cricket, and Jonny is a great fit for that.”
Bairstow’s move follows a series of English players heading to the BBL. Ben Stokes has returned to the Adelaide Strikers, Zak Crawley will line up with the Perth Scorchers, and the Overton twins are set to represent the Melbourne Stars. Additionally, Tom Curran has been signed by the Brisbane Heat.
