Anrich Nortje is eager to don the South African Test cap once more as the national team gears up for their three-Test series against Australia, starting on 9th October. The fast bowler, who last appeared in the longest format over three years ago, has been diligently preparing with the red ball in mind.
“Red-ball cricket has been my focus for quite a while now,” Nortje shared from Durban, where the squad is preparing for the upcoming series. He’s been refining his skills and building the necessary endurance to return to Test cricket. “There were one or two things that were lacking that I wanted to improve,” he added, highlighting his commitment to his comeback.
Nortje has benefited from working closely with national bowling coach Piet Botha. Being based in the same city, Gqeberha, has enabled them to devise a comprehensive plan for Nortje’s return. “He’s always been a good reference,” Nortje commented about Botha, with whom he has frequently reviewed video analyses to enhance his bowling action.
Known for bowling at impressive speeds often exceeding 145 kph, Nortje has historically faced injury challenges. His pace generates significant stress on his body, which led him to focus more on T20 cricket in recent years. However, the desire for the complexity and richness of Test cricket remains strong.
Reflecting on his previous series in Australia, Nortje recalls, “It was a tough series. I enjoyed the series but wanted to get them in South Africa and do well.” The fast bowler took seven wickets during that tour but is determined to showcase his abilities in the upcoming contests.
Australia’s previous scheduled tour to South Africa was called off in 2021 due to COVID-19 concerns, adding more anticipation and a point to prove for Nortje and his teammates. “I want to show I am better than what I was then,” Nortje said, eager to contribute positively to a team that has progressed significantly.
South Africa’s squad faces challenges, with several fast bowlers sidelined due to injuries. Though not under a central contract with CSA, Nortje’s varied participation in domestic and international T20 leagues, including the SA20, keeps him in good stead for selection. The team will finalise their lineup after an intra-squad match, with Nortje in strong contention to be included, especially given the uncertainty surrounding Kagiso Rabada’s fitness.
As the series approaches, Nortje’s ambition is clear. “Hopefully, I can just add 1%, 2%, whatever it might be, to help the team,” he says, ready to seize any opportunity to contribute to his country’s cricketing success.
