In the recent ODI tri-series held in the UAE, Afghanistan’s bowlers shone brightly, with Rashid Khan showcasing his remarkable talent once more. However, head coach Richard Pybus wants to ensure other bowlers receive their due recognition for their commendable efforts.
Rashid Khan emerged as a pivotal figure by taking 3 for 41, setting the stage for Afghanistan’s decisive seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in Sharjah. This win marked Rashid’s sixth consecutive ODI with at least three wickets, a feat only achieved once before by Pakistan’s Umar Gul.
Pybus commented on Afghanistan’s bowling prowess after the final, expressing his satisfaction with the team’s collective performance. “The spin bowling has been excellent throughout the week,” he stated. “Rashid has been phenomenal but he’s not on his own. He’s been supported with a very diverse but a very competent bowling unit.”
Afghanistan, chasing a target of 170 set by Zimbabwe, comfortably reached 173 in 34.3 overs, thanks to strong contributions from Ibrahim Zadran, who remained not out on 70, and captain Rahmat Shah with 43 runs.
Rahmat Shah’s leadership has yielded seven consecutive ODI wins for Afghanistan, enhancing his growing reputation. “Rahmat is wonderful as captain. He’s a very calm, assured player, leading with authority,” Pybus praised. He highlighted Rahmat’s role as both a batsman and leader, mentioning his noteworthy performances, especially the century in a Test against Bangladesh.
Looking ahead, Pybus emphasised the importance of Afghanistan engaging more frequently with higher-ranked teams to foster further development. “We have got some great players [but] we need to build a great team,” he explained. Playing against top-tier teams, he said, is “really critical” for their ongoing development.
The series in the UAE posed its share of challenges, primarily due to the demanding climate. Players were visibly exhausted during matches, including the final. Despite this, Pybus acknowledged the team’s resilience, saying, “Credit to the boys for being able to cope with the heat and the humidity. They have been exceptional this week.”
Reflecting on the team’s recent performances, Pybus said, “We came off the back of a positive series in Ireland. We’re looking to build a side which can adapt to different conditions. We need to develop a side which can perform in any conditions around the world.”
Several Afghan players have put up significant performances, including Rahmat and Sediqullah Atal with their centuries, and fast bowlers like Mohammad Saleem and Yameen Ahmadzai delivering impressive spells. Pybus hopes this consistency continues as they prepare for upcoming T20 challenges, expressing optimism in the growing competition for spots in the squad.
The recent tri-series exemplifies Afghanistan’s growing capability on the world stage, laying a promising foundation for future successes as they continue to develop their skills and face steadily stronger opposition.
