Shamar Springer of the West Indies admits it’s tough to counter Abhishek Sharma’s prowess on the pitch. “He’s the X-factor so far,” Springer commented, pointing towards Roston Chase’s contributions as pivotal for their side.
In the recent third T20 International against India, Cheteshwar Pujara noted India’s bowling effectively exploited the conditions. Opting to field after winning the toss, West Indies expected dew to be a factor in the challenging chase of 224 runs in Indore. However, nature had different plans, and the dew didn’t materialise.
“That’s how it goes,” accepted Springer post-match, following West Indies’ 14-run loss, putting them at 1-2 in the five-match series. Reflecting on their efforts, Springer said, “The Indian guys really executed well in the middle, stifling us and leaving too many runs to chase at the end. We hoped the wicket would behave better, but it played lower than anticipated.” The lack of anticipated dew added to their challenges, allowing India’s bowlers to utilise the conditions more effectively.
As Abhishek Sharma began his innings cautiously, Roston Chase’s overs initially kept him in check. But after a few overs, Sharma’s aggression took over, taking him to 69 from 30 balls before Springer managed to take his wicket. “He’s a world-class player, and credit to him for the way he played. Our Plan B was just to be as defensive as possible,” Springer shared. “Trying to contain players of his calibre is no easy feat.”
Springer’s two wickets were a bright spot in an otherwise challenging encounter for the West Indies. Abhishek’s battle with Chase at the top was particularly compelling, with Chase having dismissed him in the first two T20Is with his offspin. Sharma, appearing more reserved initially, ultimately succeeded in taking the attack to Chase.
“Roston’s been underrated, but in our dressing room, we truly value his contributions,” commented Springer on his teammate. “He brings much-needed stability and calm, becoming our X-factor so far.”
West Indies now look to regroup as they aim to bounce back in the remaining matches against India.
