Finlay Bean Moves from Yorkshire to Northamptonshire

Finlay Bean, a top-order batter for Yorkshire, has made the decision to depart Headingley earlier than anticipated to join Northamptonshire on a three-year contract. Although Bean extended his contract with Yorkshire in March, ensuring his stay until the end of 2028, he sought an early release after losing his spot in the County Championship XI. Despite scoring one century and having an average of 25.22 early in the season, Bean opted for this career shift.

Bean’s first-class cricket statistics boast an average of 33.53. He truly made his mark in 2023, scoring 983 runs at an average of 46.80. However, his performance in white-ball cricket has been more restrained, with just a single List A century in 27 innings, and he is yet to participate in a senior T20 match.

Northamptonshire’s head coach, Darren Lehmann, expressed his enthusiasm about Bean’s move, stating, “Bean had been on our radar for a while, so I’m really pleased to secure him on a long-term deal where he’ll hopefully develop and become a brilliant asset to the team.”

Gavin Hamilton, Yorkshire’s general manager of cricket, commented on Bean’s departure, noting, “We’ve had some really honest conversations with Fin over the last year or so and during that time he has consistently pushed for regular cricket, as he should. Fin has been a brilliant player for Yorkshire and has been a great person to have in the changing room too. We’d have been delighted to see him fulfil the remainder of his contract, but we understand and respect his ambition.”

Hamilton’s sentiment reflects the mutual respect between Bean and his former club. He acknowledged the difficulty in parting ways, especially with players nurtured through their academy, but expressed pride in Yorkshire’s contribution to Bean’s development.

Bean himself shared his excitement about the new chapter, stating, “I’m extremely delighted to be joining Northamptonshire. I can’t wait to get started and I’m looking forward to showing the fans what I can do. I can see through the Blast success and County Championship performances that it’s a great group to be part of and hopefully we can continue that next season. It’s an exciting time for me; working under Darren and the rest of the coaching staff, I’m looking forward to developing my game and making a big contribution.”

As Bean steps into this new role, both Yorkshire and Northamptonshire communities eagerly anticipate his contributions in the seasons to come.
