Sarfaraz Khan’s unwavering passion for cricket is evident despite not making the India A squad for New Zealand. His outlook remains positive, focusing on performance in domestic cricket until another international opportunity arises.
Sarfaraz, the Mumbai batsman, last represented India two years ago at Wankhede Stadium. He rejoined the national team in August for tests against Sri Lanka as an injured replacement but didn’t play. “I heard they’re looking at me for Indian conditions,” he mentioned after Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy opener against Railways at Brabourne Stadium.
Reflecting on his performances, Sarfaraz said, “I’ve scored in [South] Africa and England, and good performances are sometimes underappreciated on challenging wickets at home.” To date, he has played seven first-class matches for India A overseas, accumulating 300 runs at a 50 average, with three fifties. His performances abroad include South Africa and Bangladesh with his last appearance in England, May 2025.
In domestic cricket, Sarfaraz returned for the Ranji Trophy, holding the vice-captain role for the Irani Cup against Jammu & Kashmir, scoring 45 and 0. Despite not being selected for India A’s New Zealand tour, he remained optimistic: “Whenever a team comes out, I have expectations. But it’s their decision; my job is to play cricket.”
In Ranji Trophy, Sarfaraz has been consistent with scores of 1, 154, 40, and recently 55 in the match against Railways, averaging 62.50 this season. Despite the fluctuations of his career, he persists in his rigorous practice routine. “It’s very hard to restart every year,” he remarked. “Meeting me is as easy as going to Azad Maidan or Cross Maidan at 6 in the morning.”
His motivation is anchored to aspirations initially fulfilled in 2024 when he played for India, maintaining belief and focus. “Many things have happened, but I wake up early to train. Seeing my father’s determination motivates me,” he stated.
Sarfaraz prides himself on perseverance. Having lost 20 kg through self-initiated changes, he strives for renewed international selection. “No one asked me to lose weight; it was my decision after hearing feedback,” he revealed. Despite recognising the odds, he maintains an earnest approach: “I’ll play wherever I get the chance. If India calls, I’ll go.”
As Sarfaraz Khan continues playing and scoring, his dedication is clear, underscoring his readiness for any opportunity to represent his country again.
