The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has moved the deadline for finalising player retention and releases for the IPL 2027 auction to 17th November, offering teams a couple of extra days from the original 15th November deadline, which coincided with India’s fifth ODI against New Zealand. The player auction, a concise affair lasting a single day, is scheduled for 16th December in Goa.
Once teams finalise their player decisions, IPL officials will provide franchises with a list of available players, allowing them an opportunity to refine their selections before the final order is confirmed in the lead-up to the auction.
Two trades have already been confirmed for the upcoming auction. The Delhi Capitals have reacquired former captain Rishabh Pant from the Lucknow Super Giants, exchanging him for left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav. Additionally, the Capitals have traded fast bowler T Natarajan to Sunrisers Hyderabad in exchange for leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari.
While the specific dates for the 2027 IPL season remain unconfirmed, previous announcements proposed a window between 14th March and 30th May. However, BCCI’s secretary, Devajit Saikia, hinted that the tournament might commence towards the end of March.
This retention session marks the last mini-auction for the current IPL cycle, preceding the mega auction planned for the 2028 season, which will initiate the next media rights phase. Although the tender details for these rights haven’t been released yet, past media rights for IPL fetched a staggering INR 48,390.5 crore (approximately US$ 6.2 billion), distinguishing the league among the world’s elite sporting competitions.
