India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has lauded the team’s exceptional performance in a tightly contested T20I series in New Zealand. Despite having minimal time for preparation, India emerged victorious with a 3-2 series win.
The squad, led by Shreyas Iyer, arrived in New Zealand with merely 24 hours to get ready for the first T20I in Christchurch. Facing unique challenges like the peculiar shapes of Kiwi grounds and unpredictable weather, many players were debuting on New Zealand soil. Gambhir admired the players’ adaptability, remarking, “These boys, apart from winning, I think how they’ve handled the conditions and how ruthless they were in the first three games.”
A remarkable example of their tenacity was their successful chase of 226 runs in the opening match, followed by a rapid 199-run chase inside 14 overs. Gambhir noted, “If we hadn’t won this series, no one would have talked about one practice session.”
Under Iyer’s leadership, the Indian team also secured victory in a T20I against Japan and clinched gold at the Asian Games. Gambhir emphasized the challenges faced with an inexperienced squad, particularly after inheriting a team that had an uninterrupted winning streak over two years. This experience, however, offers a chance for growth. “If you start thinking of building for the next world cup, you’ve got to give young players the opportunity,” Gambhir stated.
Additionally, Gambhir addressed Abhishek Sharma’s struggles against offspin, stressing the importance of adaptation. “Yes, Abhishek has struggled against offspin. The more he gets better at it, overall he will become a better player,” said Gambhir.
The series win in New Zealand not only highlights India’s depth in talent but also their perseverance under testing circumstances. This tour remains a crucial stepping stone as the team gears up for future global challenges.
