India Opt to Bowl as Kishan and Mayank Return

India, led by Shreyas Iyer, have decided to bowl first against New Zealand in Auckland, marking the fourth successful toss for Iyer on this tour. The team has made two notable changes to their line-up: Ishan Kishan returns, replacing Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, and Mayank Yadav steps in for Bhuvneshwar Kumar. This reshuffling ends the brief run of the opening pair that set a record with the highest powerplay score in T20I history, 118 runs, in the last match.

Iyer’s determination to field his best XI reflects his desire to achieve a clean sweep of the series, currently standing at 3-0. “We have decided we are not going to leave no stone unturned. We have won the series but I still feel the job is half done. It’s important to be ruthless,” he articulated, underlining his intent not just to experiment.

New Zealand have also made a tactical adjustment, bringing in Nathan Smith in place of Kyle Jamieson. The focus for the Kiwis remains on setting a competitive total, especially at a venue known for supporting chases. Notably, Auckland was where they previously posted their highest T20I score of 243, only to face defeat.

Mitchell Santner, New Zealand’s captain, noted the need for improvement, particularly in fielding, while commending the batting unit. He stated, “Fresh day, new ground, new pitch,” hoping these factors could change their luck. He acknowledged the bowling group’s challenge in securing breakthroughs and managing overs effectively if wickets are hard to come by.
