Iyer Reflects on Changing Pitch Dynamics in Christchurch

In the opening T20I game against New Zealand, India captain Shreyas Iyer observed a notable transformation in the pitch conditions at Christchurch, which he believes aided their successful chase. Even with just one training session beforehand, India adapted seamlessly to accomplish their highest successful T20I pursuit, achieving a target of 226.

“When we began bowling, the pitch seemed a bit slower,” said Iyer during the post-match interview. India claimed victory by four wickets with two deliveries remaining. “Initially, the ball was holding up slightly, and we bowled slightly fuller than the ideal hard lengths. But as the match advanced, dew set in, and the surface became flatter. Consequently, the ball started skidding through, making it easier to bat.”

New Zealand capitalised on this and set a formidable target of 220. “Credit to them for their efforts. To chase such a total, we needed a strong start,” Iyer remarked. India crucially hit 94 runs within the powerplay, with Sanju Samson contributing 50 to that effort.

Samson, who also kept wickets, mentioned how this dual role gave him insights for batting in Christchurch’s changing conditions. Scoring 67 off 33 balls, he explained, “Keeping allows you to think about your batting. Today, while fielding, I analysed my approach. Initially, the ball wasn’t coming on as quickly, but with the dew later, it came onto the bat nicely.”

Naman Dhir, in his maiden overseas T20I appearance, showcased poise with his 42 off 15 balls. Despite Iyer being dismissed in the penultimate over, Dhir helped guide India to victory. Although not utilised as a bowler this game, Dhir has been instrumental in past series, offering an additional bowling option.

“Yes, Dhir gives us versatility,” Iyer noted. “Especially on a ground like this, his ability to deliver crucial overs shifts momentum. His calmness today while batting was extraordinary.”

Looking ahead, India will meet New Zealand again in the second T20I at Christchurch this Saturday.
