Bangladesh’s recent outings in limited-overs cricket have highlighted a significant challenge: their batting performances on foreign soil. Following their elimination from the UAE ODI tri-series, where they succumbed to defeats against Afghanistan and Zimbabwe, stand-in captain Towhid Hridoy has pointed to mindset issues as the crux of the problem.
Reflecting on the dismal outings, where Bangladesh were bowled out for a meagre 172 against Zimbabwe and 160 against Afghanistan, Hridoy emphasised, “It is quite clear that the batters have performed very poorly in the last two matches, and the entire team has suffered as a result.”
At home, Bangladesh have shown prowess, defeating formidable teams like Australia, New Zealand, and Pakistan. However, their recent struggles abroad include an ODI series loss in Zimbabwe and an early exit in the Asian Games.
Hridoy noted the team’s inconsistency: “Keep in mind that this same team has defeated some major opponents on our home soil. I wouldn’t judge the entire team based on just one or two matches or a couple of series.” Nevertheless, he acknowledged the need for improvement in foreign conditions, adding, “The batting unit failed collectively. There are definitely areas where our batting unit needs to improve, especially when playing in foreign conditions.”
The tri-series matches revealed familiar patterns for Bangladesh. Against Afghanistan, they were reduced to 28 for 4 within seven overs, and against Zimbabwe, the collapse was swift after a solid start from Tanzid Hasan.
Hridoy stressed the importance of adapting quickly and maintaining a proactive approach. “The issue is indeed related to mindset. I believe there is room for improvement here,” he said. He called for more courageous approaches: “The question is whether we are playing with the necessary courage. In international cricket, it is extremely difficult to succeed if you maintain a defensive mindset.”
In terms of results, Bangladesh’s away record stands at four losses out of five ODIs this year, contrasting with six wins at home. Their last away ODI series victory was in May 2023 against Ireland, while they have achieved recent successes in Test series abroad.
Hridoy highlighted the need for strategic play and accountability. “When our entire batting unit collapses and we are unable to recover, it suggests that we need to devise better plans. There are moments…where we need to steady the ship and hold our ground. It is crucial that one or two players take responsibility in such difficult situations.”
Bangladesh faces the challenge of converting their discussions into tangible on-field performances. As Hridoy aptly puts it, “I believe the issue lies in the failure of our batsmen. We need to adapt to foreign conditions quickly.”
The path forward for Bangladesh is clear: embrace adaptability, foster a courageous mindset, and deliver consistent performances, especially when away from home comforts.
