Australia’s Cameron Green seems poised to miss the upcoming second Test against South Africa in Gqeberha. His return for the final match in Cape Town appears more probable. Green, constrained by an abdominal strain from the last ODI in Potchefstroom, is making gradual progress. On Thursday, he returned to the nets for the first time, engaging in light throwdowns and some slip catching on the field before undergoing another fitness session under medical supervision.
Matthew Wade, the assistant coach, mentioned, “He’s here today. I’m not sure of his programme, but he’ll be hitting over the next week and he started to get moving last Test.” Wade hinted that the team isn’t counting on Green until the third Test, though it’s a positive indication that he’s recovering.
Head coach Andrew McDonald had earlier noted that even if Green were fit to return, bowling might not be on the cards for this series. During the Durban Test, Green’s absence necessitated a reshuffle in the batting line-up, with Matt Renshaw stepping into the No. 5 position, where he impressively contributed 272 runs. Green had been anticipated to secure a similar spot after excelling against Bangladesh back in August.
Josh Inglis, another key player, is making strides in his recovery from a fractured finger. “He’ll start to push for this Test,” observed Wade. “Whether his finger is 100% right for this Test, I’m not sure, but he’s looking to put himself on the frame.” Inglis has been increasing his batting intensity, working against Scott Boland and Michael Neser at centre-wicket nets.
While Beau Webster’s role at No. 7 could be questioned, especially with Australia having convincingly secured the first Test, changes appear unlikely unless fitness issues arise among the bowlers. Webster, along with Boland and Neser, participated in centre-wicket training on Thursday.
As the second Test commences on October 18, teams may have to contend with potential rain disruptions predicted for the initial two days.
