Off-spinner Eden Carson is making her much-anticipated return from an elbow injury for New Zealand’s T20 series against Australia set to begin on 18th October. Joining her in the squad are recalled players, wicketkeeper-batter Bella James and fast bowlers Molly Penfold and Hannah Rowe.
Izzy Gaze, another wicketkeeper-batter, was unavailable for selection due to thumb surgery and aims to return to play in early 2027, as shared by New Zealand Cricket. In Gaze’s absence, Polly Inglis will be stepping up as the wicketkeeper. The squad for the upcoming series will be led by Melie Kerr and notably includes 11 members from the squad that participated in the T20 World Cup last June.
Eden Carson, who has been out since December due to her injury, commented on her return: “To be back in the White Ferns environment is really special. The rehab process has taken a lot of patience, but I’ve been fortunate to have great support around me and I’m feeling ready to get back out there and contribute.”
Hannah Rowe, with 24 wickets from 47 T20Is, makes her return to international cricket, having last played in September 2024. Meanwhile, Molly Penfold, with 11 T20Is under her belt since her debut in 2022, last appeared in the series against Zimbabwe in March. Bella James, who debuted in March 2025, has only one T20I appearance. Both Rowe and James recently featured in New Zealand A’s tour to Sri Lanka in May.
The selection of Penfold and Rowe follows the retirements of seasoned players Sophie Devine and Lea Tahuhu, while James’s inclusion comes in the wake of Suzie Bates’ retirement to bolster the batting line-up, according to the cricket board’s release.
The upcoming series marks New Zealand’s inaugural international stint for the 2026-27 season and serves as preparation for the groundbreaking 2027 Women’s Champion Trophy in India.
Dean Brownlie will temporarily take over the reins as head coach for the tour after Ben Sawyer’s departure. Brownlie, who has been New Zealand’s batting coach for nearly four years, mentioned, “There’s a balance of experience and future-focus in this squad and it’s going to be a chance for the group to test themselves against a quality side. Competing against the best in the world is always going to be a challenge, but it also provides a lot of opportunities to learn and strengthen skillsets within that.”
The team is slated to depart for Australia on 12th October, with a warm-up match against a Governor General’s XI scheduled for 15th October. The T20I matches will all take place at North Sydney Oval.
