Simi Singh Calls Time on International Cricket Career

Ireland’s versatile cricketer, Simi Singh, has decided to retire from international cricket, concluding a memorable journey that spanned 35 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and 53 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). Originally hailing from Punjab, India, Simi moved to Ireland in 2006. Despite his aspirations, he only made his international debut at the age of 30, in 2017. Throughout his career, he amassed over 2000 runs and claimed 83 wickets, with a notable economy rate of 3.99 in ODIs.

Reflecting on his career, Simi shared, “I came to Ireland as a 19-year-old with a dream of playing international cricket, and looking back, the journey has been nothing short of surreal. I’m incredibly grateful to Ireland and to everyone who supported, believed in, and helped me along the way. None of this would have been possible without the love and support of my family, who stood by me through every step of the journey.”

Singh acknowledged the influence of key figures in his career, particularly mentioning Alan Lewis, who he credits with playing an important role in his life. “I’ll always be grateful for his guidance and support. Additionally, an exceptional coach can make a real difference to a player, and for me, Graham Ford was that coach. He was vital to my career and achievements,” remarked Simi.

The year 2021 marked a peak in Simi’s cricketing achievements. He began with an outstanding performance against the UAE in Abu Dhabi, where he remained unbeaten on 54 and took 5 wickets for just 10 runs in an ODI. Later that year, he set a record against South Africa, scoring an unbeaten 100 from the No. 8 position—a first in ODIs. These achievements led to his inclusion in the ICC’s ODI Team of the Year.

Facing challenges beyond cricket, Simi underwent liver transplant surgery in 2024 following acute liver failure. Post-recovery, he established a coaching academy in Punjab, furthering his commitment to nurturing cricket talent.

“Ireland will always have a special place in my heart,” Simi concluded. “I’ll forever be a proud supporter of Irish cricket, and I wish the next generation every success in achieving great things. Thank you, Ireland.”

As Simi Singh departs from the international stage, his legacy and dedication to cricket will undoubtedly continue to inspire upcoming players in Ireland and beyond.
