Tom Westley has decided to relinquish his role as captain of Essex, concluding a challenging season where the club currently faces the threat of relegation from the County Championship’s top division.
Westley, now 37, boasts a long-standing relationship with Essex, having joined their academy in 2003. His appointment as captain came in January 2020, following Ryan ten Doeschate stepping away after a fruitful double-win season including the County Championship and T20 Blast in 2019.
In the opening phase of his captaincy, Westley led Essex to the Bob Willis Trophy victory in 2020, an alternate competition created during the pandemic. Notably, in 2025, he became the club’s leading run-scorer in One Day Cup history. However, the recent season has proved turbulent, with Essex suffering five losses out of six in the Championship matches held from June to September. Adverse weather ultimately curtailed their season-ending clash against Glamorgan, averting another likely defeat.
Essex concluded the season eighth in Division One, narrowly 25 points above the relegation zone. Yet, their position hangs on the decision of Leicestershire’s appeal over a 27-point deduction due to pitch concerns in a game against Glamorgan.
Reflecting on his tenure, Westley shared, “Captaining Essex has been, and always will be, my greatest honour. It has been a privilege to serve this great club, and it saddens me that I haven’t been able to leave it in a better place.” He candidly acknowledged his less-than-stellar performance this year, admitting, “Personally, I feel that my biggest value is scoring runs and contributing to Essex victories, something which I haven’t been able to achieve this year. For that reason, I feel now is the right time for a change and for the club to explore a new direction.”
Westley also expressed deep gratitude towards those who’ve supported him, highlighting the significance of players, coaching staff, and, importantly, his family.
Chris Silverwood, Essex’s director of cricket, noted, “We would like to thank Tom for his time as Club Captain. For six years, he has led Essex Cricket with immense pride, passion and commitment, and we are grateful for everything he has given to the role both on and off the field.”
A successor to Westley will be announced soon, signalling a new chapter for Essex cricket as they navigate the challenges ahead.
